How to Create New Baselines in Your Gantt Charts

In this article, we’ll show you how to create and manage baselines in Buildern’s Gantt Chart to track planned vs. actual project progress.

🎯 Basics First: What Is a Baseline?

A baseline represents a fixed snapshot of a project schedule at a specific moment in time. It records critical scheduling information, including:

  • Task start and end dates

  • Task durations

  • Milestone placements

Baselines function as a reference framework, enabling project managers to track deviations between the original plan and the evolving project schedule. By comparing the current timeline against the baseline, teams can identify schedule variances, assess project performance, and make informed decisions to maintain alignment with project objectives.

How Baselines Work in Buildern

Follow the steps below to create a new baseline:

Step 1: Open the Gantt Chart

  • Log in to your Buildern account

  • Open the project where you want to track schedule performance

  • Navigate to the Schedule → Gantt Chart view

Step 2: Click the Baseline Button

In the Gantt Chart toolbar:

  • Click the Baseline button

  • A panel will open showing previously created baselines

  • Select Create Baseline

A date window will appear allowing you to confirm creation.

Step 3: Create the Baseline

Click Create Baseline.

Buildern will:

  • Capture the current task positions

  • Record start and end dates

  • Save the snapshot under today’s date

The new baseline will now appear as a reference layer in your Gantt Chart.

Managing Baselines

After creating a baseline, you can:

  • Rename it (for example: “Initial Plan – March”)

  • Delete it if no longer needed

  • Toggle visibility to compare timelines

Best Practices

  • Create a baseline before making significant schedule edits

  • Use clear naming conventions (e.g., “Pre-Permit Plan,” “Phase 2 Revision”)

  • Avoid creating too many unnecessary baselines to keep tracking clean

  • Review baselines regularly during project meetings
